Special ed is ‘exceptional’ in Detroit

“Special education” will not be offered by Detroit’s main school district any more. The board has voted to adopt the term “exceptional student education,” reports Chalkbeat.

Fifty or more years ago, my mother had a friend who taught “exceptional” children. Parents would demand that their children be added to the class, not realizing that “exceptional” was a euphemism for what had been called “mentally retarded.”
