I'm taking some time off to see Quebec City, but I'll be back to blogging by the end of the week. I just had pain au chocolat for breakfast, and we're about to to on a walking tour.
I'm trying to get my high school French to kick in, but I now speak only English or a mix of French, Spanish and Italian. And I don't even know Italian.
We tried poutine with chicken. The chicken, gravy and french fries were good, but the cheese curds just seemed rubbery and tasteless. We didn't try "sugar shack" items, because I'm diabetic and not a big fan of maple syrup. We had a great smoked-meat sandwich in Montreal in a "charcuterie Hebraique" (Jewish deli), Schwartz's, which was recommended by a guy on the plane.
Definitely check out tourtiere; a Canadian essential for Christmas Eve and delicious anytime. Make two (of any size) and freeze one for later (unbaked; thaw in refrigerator before baking). King Arthur Baking has a good recipe
Enjoy!

It was decades ago but my DH and I had several excellent meals at Aux Anciens Canadiens, in the oldest house in the old city. It still exists and specializes in traditional Canadian cuisine; including tourtiere (a wonderful meat pie), pea soup etc.
