White ethnic studies teacher faces protests

Community and church leaders in Fresno are protesting the hiring of a white teacher to teach three classes in African-American, Latino and Southeast Asian studies at a new middle school, reports the Fresno Bee.

Peter Beck has years of experience teaching “cultural studies” at another Fresno school and has led the Men’s Alliance, a leadership class for at-risk teens.

“We still are at these racial fault lines, and we want someone who will be able to think critically about those racial fault lines and how do we help heal,” said the Rev. Karen Crozier.

Beck is “highly intelligent,” said Rev. Paul McCoy of New Light for New Life Church of God. However, McCoy believes teachers who look like their students will be more sensitive  about topics related to race.

“We’re all faced today with so much dysfunction and violence from young people, and that violence is simply because they don’t know who they are, they don’t know where they come from,” McCoy said at a news event. “They don’t know the responsibility and accountability it takes to become a vital citizen in this country.”

Presumably, Fresno would have to hire three teachers  – unless a tri-ethnic teacher is available.

A nearby high school is 58 percent Latino, 18 percent black, 13 percent Asian-American and 9 percent white.

  1. Where are the outraged parents protesting the fact that a middle school is teaching these ethnic studies classes instead of reading, writing and math?

    • You are assuming facts not in evidence. It’s not an “either-or” situation.

      • SC Math Teacher says:

True enough, but there is no need for these classes at all in middle school. My guess is that it’s just more progressive grievance mongering.

  2. Is it really the job of one teacher to show hundreds of kids what their identities are? Shouldn’t that be a family and close community deal?

  3. Title VII doesn’t apply in Fresno??

I am so glad my district didn’t go this route. My kid actually learned in Spanish class the year he had a native speaker. She would not have had a job if she had to match the ethnicities present in any class….we just don’t have 30 kids per grade level from her very small island.

Reverend Crozier is absolutely right! We ARE still are at “racial fault lines”—and those who think along such ‘faulty lines’ are maintaining them! If one even agrees that “ethnic studies” have a place in middle school (or high school, or college, for that matter), wouldn’t it be advantageous to have a teacher of another background heading the class? Wouldn’t that help show students that people outside their own ethnicity were not racist? (Of course, if that truth was ever revealed to these poor subjects of Leftist indoctrination, the air would be let out of one of Leftists’ biggest balloons.)

“We want someone who will be able to think critically about those racial fault lines and how do we help heal.” This statement leads me to believe the reverend doesn’t think someone of a different ethnicity capable of critical thought. Either that, or she is afraid of the proof I espoused, above. Where does racism truly lie, Rev. Crozier?

And Reverend McCoy, what does this statement even mean “…violence is simply because they don’t know who they are, they don’t know where they come from”? If I know “who I am” or “where I come from”, I will not be violent? …HUH??? This is pure Leftist babble, my friend. I rather assume any violence or unrest they may feel is more likely a result of the disquiet due to the Left’s constant harping on societal “inequities”. (Our Constitution states that all are “created equal”, not that all things will be equal in life. Our individual lives are a result of what WE make of the opportunities that come our way [by our own making or by providence], not by what OTHERS want to opportunely make happen for us—be those desires good or evil.)

“They don’t know the responsibility and accountability it takes to become a vital citizen in this country.” This is simply more Leftist babble. We ALL learn responsibility and accountability through a moral understanding (and I use the term ‘moral’ as defined prior to the mid-1960′s). This starts in the home and, by the way, reverend, IN THE CHURCH. We USED to learn such things in the home, in the church and, yes, in the school. But since the new religion of Leftism has taken over each of these formative entities, our once-great (and still capable of that greatness) society is in a deadly tailspin.

“We’re all faced today with so much dysfunction and violence from young people” probably because of all the disillusionment from the lies and broken promises that Leftist utopian ideas have promulgated.

It’s obvious, neither of you ministers actually know “what the community wants”. You may well know what SOME (whom you may or may not have coached) might prefer. EVERY community wants their children to learn! They want the best teachers possible, regardless of race/ethnicity. They want their children to be safe, to, from, and at school. They do NOT want their children indoctrinated! They want their children taught what is true. They want their children to participate in sports and music programs. They do NOT want their children divided into “special interest groups”. And while many ethnicities exist in our amazing “melting pot” nation, there should be one AMERICAN culture taught in school. Individuals, families and even communities remain free to celebrate their own race/ethnicity, as benefits their histories.

“Our individual lives are a result of what WE make of the opportunities that come our way …”

So true. Opportunities, as you imply, can be very different. A person who does well with bad opportunities may be less well off than someone who fritters away a lot of good opportunities.

BTW: “All men are created equal” is from the Declaration of Independence. The phrase “created equal” does not occur in the Constitution, nor does anything similar. Perhaps the closest is in the 14th Amendment, “… nor shall any State … deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

  5. Blacks claim that their children will refuse to learn from a White teacher?

How racist can you (train them to) be?

  6. NO, no, no. This makes perfect sense. After all, we only allow really old people to teach history, right? Only native English speakers get to teach English, right?

  7. Roger Sweeny says:

So that’s why so many people have trouble learning math.
