Duncan angers many, but keeps going

Arne Duncan
Education Secretary Arne Duncan has enraged critics on the right and left, according to a Learning Matters profile tonight on PBS NewsHour. Yet they “seem powerless to stop him.”

About Joanne

  1. I’ve assumed that Obama’s kept Duncan on to have some presence on the “choice” side of the debate over public education. That’s why Obama has him flitting about the country talking up various policies that make the NEA nuts.

The drop in union power’s getting to be a bit tough to ignore as is the rise in sentiment in favor of school choice. Obama may well be, through Duncan, attempting to build a bridgehead to the future based on these trends.

Without the support of an overwhelming majority of black voters the Democratic party loses national power and the choice debate contains the potential to split that vote.
