Academicians are not the only intellectual wanna-bes. The personnel that write job descriptions for want ads are also infected with this mindset. In searching for a new job, I’ve read I don’t know how many foggy job descriptions that don’t tell me a single thing about what a person in the advertised position is actually supposed to do.
Of course, there is a fair amount of reading between the lines – for example, “work in a fast-paced job environment” or “must be able to work well under pressure” is generally a clue that you’ll get last-minute projects with a deadline of yesterday dumped on your lap. But overall, the writing is absolutely atrocious. It’s so bad, I think a bot would come up with a better job ad ~
