21 Detroit schools are open 7 days a week

Twenty-one Detroit schools will stay open 12 hours a day, seven days a week to provide tutoring, recreation, health care, parenting classes and other social services.

State funds and donations from local businesses will help pay the cost.

  1. Another way to enable “parents” to avoid their responsibilities, at taxpayer expense. As my father used to say, “If you want less of something, tax it and if you want more of something, subsidize it”. The last 40 years of subsidizing irresponsible, dysfunctional behaviors (illegiitimacy, dependency, crime etc) prove his point.

  2. Teen birth rates have been dropping for the last 20 years and crime is down to levels comparable to that found during the 1960’s. Looks like today’s kids must be doing something right.

    • The gross average can hide a multitude of sins. A finer breakdown would be warranted (perhaps by income, ethnicity, population density). SOME of today’s kids are doing OK, some, not so much.

  3. I just checked; the illegitimacy rate in Detroit is 85%.

    As for dysfunction:
    violent crime rate, per 1000 people: Detroit = 21.6, MI= 4.45, US=309
    property crime: Detroit =62.21, MI= 26.12, US= 29.1
    crimes per square mile: Detroit=414, MI=37, US=39.6
crime index: Detroit 2/100, with 100 being the safest

That sounds like a lot of illegitimacy and dysfunction to me.

  4. Ted Craig says:

Ray – Not in Detroit. There were 495 murders in 1970 and 411 in 2006, despite a massive population drop.

This is actually a great idea with one massive problem – the schools should not be delivering it. Social services, like many other activities, should really be separated from education.
