On Community College Spotlight: A Florida community college admits awarding associate degrees to students who hadn’t completed core requirements. Some were allowed to substitute electives such as theater, mythology and photography for core courses in banking, accounting and management.

  1. Cheating. The inescapable evidence that something of value is at stake.

What is pathetic is that while valid course substitution or a waiver on a given course (actual work experience or certification granted) is a legitimate way to eliminate classes in which the student is proficient, allowing substitution in the manner shown in the article helps no one, least of all the student who has a degree, but might not have all the needed coursework if they want to continue on with their education.

  3. I’ve known some companies where mythology was substituted for accounting. 🙂
