Thinking and Linking by Joanne Jacobs
In 1995, when I was at Wesleyan, there was a humor magazine that came out that had one of the funniest things I’d ever read at the time. It was a fake memo from the Dean of Students (or some similar office — I don’t remember the title) and it was all about the new mandatory diversity program. The line I remember best was something like:
“On a going-forward basis, all Wesleyan Students will be expected to demonstrate diversity. We will all be diverse, and we will all be diverse in accordance with uniform diversity requirements.”
Glad to see things haven’t changed much.
The schools that do not have the multi-cultural group of students on the front of all of their brochures are the schools that are really diverse like George Mason, Houston, Memphis, Central Florida, Long Beach State, Temple, Georgia State because those students have such few white students that the brochures are designed to overemphasis white students and hide the large number of non-white students.
There was a meme going around a while back with college/uni webmasters: when the boss asks for something that doesn’t make sense, just post a picture of a girl reading a textbook under a tree.
