Today is a historic day: It’s my daughter Allison’s 30th birthday. Also George Washington’s. This means that I am the mother of a 30-year-old. And yet I’m so young.
I’ve been on the road for nearly a week to attend the Education Writers Association conference in New York, then a family wedding in Florida and now hospital visiting in Baltimore, where my stepdaughter faces surgery tomorrow — and possibly the premature birth of her daughter, who’s 30 weeks along.
Allison wasn’t premature, but she was very, very sick at birth and spent two weeks in the intensive care nursery. Those early days when the doctors thought she wasn’t going to survive were hell. Allison turned out to be a very strong person.
I hope my stepdaughter and her husband don’t have to go through that. But they’ll cope with what comes.
Update: The surgery is over and the baby remains inside! Take your time, kiddo.
