Dave Barry on campus correctness

The most “intellectually constipated” place in America? College campuses have let the spurious right not to be offended trump free speech says humor columnist Dave Barry on a FIRE video.

  1. Richard Nieporent says:

Who knew that Dave Barry was a subversive? Someone call HUAC!

  2. Kevin Smith says:

There was a time when the sentiment in that Barry quote would have been the slogan of the Student Union on most campuses in the USA. What happened?

  3. tim-10-ber says:

How did we let the great experiences of college campuses in the 1960s and 1970s get away? What are the “boomers” scared of today?

  4. Ponderosa says:

While I think the student has a right to display it, I think the Barry quote is disturbing. In a democracy, the government is the distillation of the people’s will. It is the essence of democracy. It is the way-better alternative to all other forms of government; we should relish it. To be fully opposed to the American government is basically saying, “Democracy is a failure; let unelected powers (e.g. corporations, rich men, tyrants) steer our course.”

  5. “In a democracy, the government is the distillation of the people’s will. It is the essence of democracy.”

Thankfully, we live in a republic rather than a democracy.

  6. Ponderosa says:

    A democratic republic.

  7. A democracy is the distillation of some people’s will over the wishes of dissenters. Dissenters in a democracy are subjected to force (or the threat of force) just as in a dictatorship. Democracy might be preferrable to dictatorship most of the time, but let’s not confuse it with freedom. The best description of democracy I ever heard is that democracy is three wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for lunch. Looking around at things these days, that’s a very apt description of what democracy has brought us. If your goal is freedom, democracy is a failure.

  8. Mike Curtis says:

The Bill of Rights protects citizens from the tyranny of the majority. Lord knows we’ll need to be defended from “majority rule.”

Ponderosa, China is a “democratic republic.”

  9. I thought China was a “People’s” Republic.  That’s what they call themselves, at any rate.

  10. I think N. Korea is the democratic republic.

Regardless, the dictionary definition of democracy is “a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.”
