The Great Charter Debate

Charter schools: threat or menace? (Old joke of my first husband’s.) Reason Foundation’s Lisa Snell debates Ralph Shaffer, an emeritus history professor from Cal Poly-Pomona, in the Los Angeles Times.

Here’s part 1 and part 2.

President Obama’s support for charter schools — and tendency to visit charter schools — is driving the status quo advocates nuts.

  1. Part 1 and part 2 are suspiciously similar but beyond that the primary virtue of the debate is in keeping the debate in front of the public since neither debater seems all that interested in venturing away from the well-trodden path.

Professor Shaffer doesn’t deviate in the least from the usual misrepresentations, misdirection and occasional outright lie necessary to the defense of the school district. Lisa Snell, sadly, does little justice to the concept of the charter school by challenging the central, if never-voiced tenet, of charter schools – the valuelessness of the school district.
