Old school books

Here’s a great collection of 19th century schoolbooks, including a primary speller, advice for a young lady on etiquette and an “arithmetick” lesson on extracting the square root.

  • It’s not exactly a schoolbook, but the letter-writing guide makes me recommend Max Beerbohm’s essay ‘ ‘How Shall I Word It?’ ‘ (The quotes are in the original title.) I’m especially fond of the thank-you note that’s Max’s last example, but I won’t spoil it for you.
