‘No’ isn’t enough

Abstinence-only sex ed doesn’t affect teens’ sexual behavior, concludes a review of research by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

“At present there does not exist any strong evidence that any abstinence program delays the initiation of sex, hastens the return to abstinence or reduces the number of sexual partners” among teenagers, the study concluded.

By contrast, “two-thirds of the 48 comprehensive programs that supported both abstinence and the use of condoms and contraceptives for sexually active teens had positive behavior effect,” including “delaying the initiation of sex, reducing the frequency of sex, reducing the number of sexual partners and increasing condom or contraceptive use.”

Telling kids about contraception and condoms doesn’t promote promiscuity, the study concludes.

  • When I was a teenager being a math nerd and going to college early delayed the initiation of sex very effectively. It probably isn’t something that would work in general, though.

  • What, no cries of outrage that such an obviously biased group has published its slanted views in a “study”? Walter must be on vacation.
