It’s not about Allah

Do College Republicans Hate Allah? asks Cathy Young in Reason, writing about San Francisco State’s investigation of an anti-terror protest. College Republicans had walked on replicas of Hamas and Hezbollah flags, which have Arabic writing with the name of Allah.

Would the College Republicans’ speech have become less constitutionally protected if they had known that the flags contained Allah’s name? Perhaps Muslims ought to have a beef with terrorists who put Allah’s name on their flags, not with people who stomp on those flags. (One unnoticed irony is that a Ku Klux Klan flag that was given similar treatment at the rally contained an image of the cross.)

Free speech rights wouldn’t be suspended for Jesus and shouldn’t be suspened for Allah either, Young argues.

I wrote about the SF State controversy here and here.
