  1. Here’s the basic issue: we’ve spent sixty years letting the educational establishment jerk the schools from one faddish scheme to another, without consideration of actual effectiveness. What we’ve done in the name of reform is more akin to flinging rocks in all directions, without ever pausing to measure any effects.

    But as long as academic careers prosper by avoiding reality, and as long as parents have no real choice, there’s little hope of improving the system.
