Throwing Things is liveblogging the National Spelling Bee, which is down to 13 finalists who’ll spell on primetime TV tonight. The enthusiasm is infectious. I joined the Throwing Things’ pool and both of my spellers, Katharine Close and Caitlin Campbell, made the finals. I chose on the basis of alliteration.
Update: Close won!
Mr. Sun also liveblogged the bee. He was rooting for Saryn Hooks, who survived a judges’ error to make it to the final three, but praised the winner.
Kerry Close of Asbury Park, NJ, hear me now and believe me later: you are the absolute coolest cat on the planet tonight — and an inspiration to everyone who cares about learning:
Remarkably for the bee, Close is neither Indo-American nor homeschooled.
