Nebraska’s only black legislator, Sen. Ernie Chambers, has pushed through a bill separating Omaha public schools into three districts: One will be mostly black, one will be mostly Hispanic and the third will be mostly white. The districts will share the same tax base. The school board had tried to annex white schools on the city’s suburban fringes, alienating parents. Chambers says the new districts will be responsive to local parents and won’t make Omaha schools any more segregated than they are already.
I’m dubious about the idea, but it will be interesting to see what happens — if the split isn’t tossed out by a judge.
My father is a proud graduate of Central High in Omaha. I wonder what district that’s in.
