In D.C.

I’m visiting Washington, D.C. for a few days. I got together with Katie Newmark of Constrained Vision and her sister Meredith (both daughters of Betsy), Casey Lartigue of Fight for Children, and Mark Lerner, board member, and Nadia Casseus, school director, of the William E. Doar Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts, known to its friends as WEDJ. WEDJ will run from pre-K through sixth grade in its second year and eventually will go through 12th grade. Students attend from 8 to 4:15, so they have time for an academic curriculum and for “conservatory” classes in music, dance, drama and art. Casseus says the school is short of musical instruments; the top priority is acquiring percussion and wind instruments. Donations are welcome.

I also got to see some old friends whose son, who has a master’s in engineering, will be teaching secondary school as a New York Teaching Fellow.

About Joanne

  1. If you have any interest at all, try to get to the new Air and Space annex near Dulles airport (the Udvar-Hazy Center.) It is truly remarkable.
