Here’s more on the issue of requiring prospective teachers to demonstrate the correct “disposition.” The New York Sun reports:

Brooklyn College’s School of Education has begun to base evaluations of aspiring teachers in part on their commitment to social justice, raising fears that the college is screening students for their political views.

The School of Education at the CUNY campus initiated last fall a new method of judging teacher candidates based on their “dispositions,” a vogue in teacher training across the country that focuses on evaluating teachers’ values, apart from their classroom performance.

Critics of the assessment policy warned that aspiring teachers are being judged on how closely their political views are aligned with their instructor’s. Ultimately, they said, teacher candidates could be ousted from the School of Education if they are found to have the wrong dispositions.

Several students and former students report retaliation for disagreeing with a professor.

About Joanne

  1. This is very disturbing, but I can already imagine how poorly it will be executed.

  2. Richard Nieporent says:

If they are going to mandate this policy they will have to change their name from the School of Education to the School of Indoctrination.

The report to the council stated that teacher candidates will “self-evaluate and faculty will evaluate the candidates on 8 dispositions at mid-semester and at the end of the semester.” Those who perform poorly in the assessment are given “counseling.”

I guess the next thing will be to send them to psychiatric hospitals. Wasn’t that how they did it in the Soviet Union?

  3. BadaBing says:

it’s either a psyciatric ward or a penal colony in Siberia. Under Article 58 of the Soviet Constitution, persons suspected of spying, treason, and doctrinal impurity could be imprisoned, tried and sent to the GULAG. “Kolyma Tales” is a great read if you want a peak into the hell hole that Stalin created. Let’s see. He was a Marxist. So are a significant number of university professors. Well, they’d probably call themselves neo-Marxists to separate themselves from, you know, guys like Stalin, Pol Pot or that whacko in North Korea. Anyway, this shows that the Left is not interested only in power but also in purity of thought. The modern university’s obeisance before the gods of race, gender, class, diversity and tolerance fills the religious vacuum they’ve created by their fierce repudiation of Judaeo-Christian values. Perhaps CUNY and others could come up with some sort of catechism that students must memorize before they are confirmed into the new religion. Those that fail confirmation can be herded into political awareness camps with all the rest of the bigots, homophobes, racists and Republicans. I guess that last one was redundant.
