Non-conformist in court

Scott McConnell, kicked out of LeMoyne College’s education school for his beliefs, has filed a lawsuit. Despite excellent grades and evaluations, he was dropped from the program after he wrote a paper suggesting that corporal punishment might be an effective way to manage a classroom. McConnell says he wasn’t warned that ideological conformity was a requirement for successful completion of the graduate program.

Yes, FIRE is on the case big time. I have been following it, and it appears Lemoyne is in for a whole wolrd of hurt.

You mean educational institutions aren’t supposed to force students to believe in their point of view?

  4. McConnell says he wasn’t warned that ideological conformity was a requirement for successful completion of the graduate program.

Jeez, where was he raised? In a cave? He should have known that the phrase “free exchange of ideas” means the free exchange of acceptable ideas.

    Joanne:

You wrote, “McConnell says he wasn’t warned that ideological conformity was a requirement for successful completion of the graduate program.” Mr. McConnell probably was not given that warning. However, the mission statement of Le Moyne College includes the following sentence. “Le Moyne College seeks to prepare its members for leadership and service in their personal and professional lives to promote a more just society.” Does Mr. McConnell really believe that beating children rods, boards, straps, or other implements will “promote a more just society”?

I was once in a classroom where a boy was beaten by the teacher. The girl who was sitting to my right saw that assault and was so upset that she started crying.

Classroom violence creates an atmosphere of fear. That fear kills the joy of learning. People who advocate classroom violence should not be allowed in classrooms.

The faculty and staff of Le Moyne College have the RIGHT to disassociate themselves from a man who advocates violence against children. They dismissed Mr. McConnell from Le Moyne College. They made the correct decision.
