Safer schools

School crime fell sharply from 1992 to 2002, according to a federal report. Violent victimizations per 1,000 students declined from 48 per 1,000 students to 24. Between 1995 and 2003, the percentage of students who reported being a victim of a crime of violence or theft at school also declined from 10 percent to 5 percent.

About Joanne

  1. That’s great if it’s a real drop (I haven’t looked at the stats for some time). One thing to watch for is that these sorts of reports often change their definitions without drawing too much attention to the changes, and it can bias the trends. For instance, some studies ask about incidents “in school” others “on school grounds” and still others “in, or on the way to or from, school”. Changing from one def’n to another will cause wild swings.
