For whites only

Bake sales with race-based prices were just the beginning. Affirmative action protests are escalating. Now a student group at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island is offering a $250 scholarship for a white student who writes on “why you are proud of your white heritage” and submits a recent picture to “confirm whiteness.”

Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.

“We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn’t really be an option,” he said. “Many people think that coming from a white background you’re automatically privileged, you’re automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That’s just not the case.”

Ironically, Mattera received a $5,000 minority-only scholarship because he’s Puerto Rican. Well, I guess he’s not eligible for the $250.

The university is staying out of it. Shrewd move.

  1. Wacky Hermit says:

I have a student in my night class who says that if he gets anything less than an A, he will lose his merit-based scholarship. I feel bad for him (he’s not getting an A), so I told him there were probably other scholarships out there for him. He insists there aren’t– he comes from a middle-class white family. Maybe I should e-mail him the info about this scholarship.

  2. This will attract publicity, but misses the point that private scholarships can have any condition that the donor wants. They are frequently limited to people pursuing specific majors or extracurricular activities, or from specific counties or high schools. When I went to college, I came across scholarships for redheads and twins. There’s a difference between a condition on a private scholarship and a government policy of affirmative action. However, in my experience the students I know who had ‘minority’ scholarships came from families that were independently wealthy and definitely not ‘underpriviledged’.

  3. PJ/Maryland says:

As Dana says, private scholarships can have all sorts of conditions. I think things get blurred because sometimes the private scholarship programs are administered by the college (ie the donor gives the money to the school to set up an endowment to be used for a scholarship for red-heads).

There’s a reprint of a longer article from the Providence Journal on the College Republicans website (http://www.rwucr.com) which has the following paragraph in it: Roger Williams offers a handful of minority scholarships. They are paid for by either private foundations or families. The vast majority of the university’s scholarships are open to all students, regardless of race, and many benefit from them.

So it does sound like it’s only private scholarships which take race or minority status into account, at least at RWU.

  4. Hmmmm, anything less than an “A” usually means he’s not doing very well in his other classes, as most merit based scholarships require a GPA of at least 3.0 to continue receiving them.

I don’t have a problem with ‘white only’ scholarship, i’m surprised that the ACLU and NAACP aren’t screaming bloody murder over this
    one.

  5. The ACLU AND NAACP AREN’T SCREAMING BECAUSE THIS IS JUST A PLOY BY RICHARD SCARFE AND OTHER RIGHT WING PARIAHS TO DRUDGE THIS UP BEFORE THE ELECTION. THEY HAVE FUNDED COLLEGE REPUBLICAN GROUPS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND THIS IS NOTHING NEW.IT’S FUNNY THAT Mattera A PERSON OF COLOR, WOULD RATHER ALIGN HIMSELF WITH WHITE FOLKS. I WONDER HOW MUCH HE HAS TO HATE HIMSELF( AND HIS HERITAGE) TO DO THAT. AND AS A POINT OF INTEREST MOST ALUMNI AND LEGACY SCHOLARSHIPS AT NON HBCU’S (HISTORICVALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES) ARE PRETTY MUCH FOR WHITES ONLY; THEY MAKE UP 90%OF THE LEGACIES-CHECK THE STATISTICS

  6. You know what? I’m sick of this. Being white, all around me, I see people who are black being treated better. Black colleges, black clubs, black tv channels, black history month. That’s all fine and well. Now think of this: White colleges, white clubs, white only tv channels, white history month. That would be racist and shunned. If you need proof of affirmative action-it’s right there. I think that ALL scholarships should be open to everyone, not just all whites or al blacks. That’s not right at all.

  7. I’m doing an editorial for my school newspaper in Florida on whites seeming to be the “new minority.” Any statistics or facts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
