Thinking and Linking by Joanne Jacobs
Slate is running the weeklong journal of a sixth grade teacher in the Bronx. It starts here.
The thing that stands out the most is how teachers generally have no “weapon” to use against unruly students when they act up… The lack of a detention room seemed to inhibit the teacher’s ability to keep certain students in order… That contrasted with the other students who played for the Jr. Knicks… For those students, Mr. Moore had the option(threat) of reporting misbehavior to their coach…
I don’t know what the options are, but it seems that giving teachers a little bit more weight behind their words couldn’t hurt…
The thing that stands out most is how emotionally draining it can be to teach in low income, high stress areas.
The teacher attrition rate in some areas is very high.
