Patriotism, rising

How it shames me to see my fellow Westerners parading their blindness to cultural differences and imposing their own patriotism = imperialism worldview on the People of Yamato. After all, the bureaucrats have assured parents, at least in Fukuoka, that the important thing is “having a consciousness of one’s Japanese-ness and working toward a peaceful world.” When has Japanese patriotism meant anything else?

On a totally unrelated note, NHK just ran a two-part series of restored Technicolor film to show the experiences of the Japanese during WWII. You can imagine how selective–uh, discriminating–the view of reality was, though a lot of it really was very moving.
