What makes a school work? Just for Kids has a web site devoted to Texas schools that are improving student achievement.
The best practices include: setting measurable goals, aligning resources to achieve goals, monitoring performance and intervening to deal with problems.
Freeport Intermediate School in Brazosport keeps popping up as a good example, so I checked out its profile in Schools to Watch. When the principal arrived in 1995, the school was divided by gang rivalries; three eighth graders had been arrested for murder. The school was a confirmed low performer.
Freeport is now about to achieve “exemplary” status. Discipline problems are way down. High school math teachers came by to thank Freeport math teachers for sending on algebra-ready students.
