Talking about rudeness
A Seattle teacher used “the n-word” to make a sophomore think about his use of “gay” as an all-purpose insult. Now the NAACP wants the teacher fired for lowering the student’s self-esteem.
Steve Sharkansky has it right: The teacher, a former Microsoft tech manager, was unwise to use the word. But the response is ludicrous. The NAACP must know that the real threat to black students doesn’t come from teachers who use an anti-black insult to teach students not to use insulting language. The threat comes from teachers with low expectations for black students’ behavior and academic work.
